What it does? Pivot3 Serverless Computing is the first and only clustered storage solution that simultaneously runs server applications on IP SAN hardware. Pivot3 deploys server virtualization software on each clustered storage appliance so that server applications can share x86 CPU resources also used for distributed RAID operations. Hardware resources are automatically load-balanced and both server and storage failover are provided in case of clustered appliance failures. In a typical application eliminating standalone servers generates savings of 52% in rack space 44% in power and 22% in cost. These cost and green benefits are compelling for large-scale storage environments.
What makes it Innovative? First storage product integrating server virtualization with RAID technology; customers can consolidate external physical servers into the IP SAN. It would not be possible with traditional head-end RAID storage systems (direct attached or storage area network solutions). Consolidation benefits are extended to environments that would not ordinarily consolidate their servers.
Server virtualization has been one of the most quickly adopted technologies in IT but has been little used in storage architectures because traditional RAID controllers rely on proprietary hardware. Because Pivot3 uses off-the-shelf server appliances the company has a unique opportunity to leverage server virtualization technology into a new untapped market space.
Targeted Users: Pivot3 currently targets the video surveillance storage in the gaming homeland security public safety education and transportation markets. The external storage market for video surveillance is growing at 100% per year. The technology could be applied to other markets that value high capacity availability bandwidth and cost.
