Product/Technology: NEC HYDRAstor™ HS8 grid storage
Hardware or Software? Hardware
First Launched: HYDRAstor HS8 was announced on September 18, 2007. General availability was October 2007.
What it does? HYDRAstor grid storage – a unified disk platform for backup and archive – provides: unrestricted scalability to reduce complexity and cost; self-evolving capabilities to accelerate the business value of new technology; effortless management for improved staff productivity and lower operational costs; safe, enterprise de-duplication to maximize storage efficiency without data loss; and excellent TCO. HYDRAstor provides enhanced data resiliency, provision-free capacity management, and a grid-based scalable architecture that enables IT to scale capacity and performance independently and swap out old technologies for new non-disruptively. HYDRAstor offers policy-driven, integrated data management services, including deduplication, to streamline storage management.
What makes it Innovative? NEC HYDRAstor is the industry’s first unified platform for backup and archive on grid architecture. Existing backup and archive systems are siloed or patched together, increasing cost, complexity and lacking scalability. HYDRAstor delivers unrestricted scalability, effortless management, self-evolving capability and safe deduplication at less than $0.60/GB – lower than tape.
Targeted Users: Large enterprise data centers who look to new technologies to solve their backup and archive business problems. Companies looking to unify secondary storage into one shared pool of capacity with one management dashboard.
Satisfied Customers:Yes. In early 2007, we started a HYDRAstor Beta Program and signed-up 9 companies ranging from the non-profits to high-profile corporations. Beta testers spanned various verticals, and these companies have since gone on to become full-fledged customers. Customer adoption and feedback have been phenomenal. One of NEC's most recent customers with a successful HYDRAstor deployment includes Anderson Center for Autism. Anderson has reduced their backup window by 90% and is getting a 39:1 deduplication ratio.
