RFID - ALR-9650 Reader with a smart antenna for in-building asset/item tracking

Product/Technology:
ALR-9650 Reader with a smart antenna for in-building asset/item tracking

Hardware or Software? Hardware

First Launched: December 2007

What it does? The ALR-9650 is a smart antenna-class RFID solution for in-building asset tracking and access control applications.  It is the ideal solution for single and two-antenna RFID applications.  The reader electronics and a high-quality, circularly polarized antenna reside in a single package, eliminating external antenna cables, resulting in the simplest and least expensive installation. A second antenna port enables 2-antenna applications. The benefits of using the ALR-9650 include: easy to integrate; provides a low cost RFID system; has a small footprint of only 9 square inches and enables an easy, quick-start RFID solution.

What makes it Innovative? The cost and form factor changes will enable a whole new class of RFID applications.  The reader significantly lowers the cost of Gen 2 RFID through two methods.  First, the list price is approximately ½ that of leading Gen 2 readers.  Secondly, through inclusion of Power-Over Ethernet, which eliminates the need for an AC power drop typically costing $500, the cost of the RFID read point is further reduce.  This new price threshold will enable more rapid adoption of RFID.  Finally, the integrated antenna and small size significantly reduces the footprint of the read point, thereby enabling a whole class of indoor applications of RFID.

Targeted Users: End users engaged in tracking assets as they move through buildings.  For example, hospital equipment, legal file folders, digital media, library books.  Also, access control applications.

Satisfied Customers: Yes. Users tracking assets in the library, file folder and retail supply chain have been very satisfied with pilot projects and are planning significant rollouts now.
